About the Seasons
Spring: March, April,
May
As the weather begins to
warm, the fish move into shallower water and
become very active. Large specks and reds
aggressively hit top-water lures during these
months. Of course we will still be throwing
cocahoe jigs and using live shrimp, cocahoes, or
mullet. Bass and flounder are also caught in
large numbers during these months.
Summer: June, July,
August
With average temperatures
in the 80's and 90's, these months produce great
shallow water fishing. Redfish can be caught
all day long in the lakes and bayous on all
kinds of live bait and lures. Shallow water
speck fishing is outstanding in the early
morning and late afternoon. This is also a
great time of year for bass fishing with
buzzbaits and spinnerbaits or live shrimp.
During the summer we will use live menhaden (pogy
fish) to catch specks, reds and flounder. These
oily minnows are irresistible to the big trout
and reds.
Fall: September,
October, November
Speckled trout are very
active as they follow shrimp up river and into
the bayous. This time of year we will likely be
watching for flocks of seagulls to locate the
trout. These months produce great top-water
action.
Winter: December,
January, February
We have very few extremely
cold days in South Mississippi, so don't shy
away from this time of year. Many serious
speckled trout fishermen only fish in winter
because the trout bunch up in schools and
migrate to deeper holes where they are easy to
catch in large numbers. We will be using a lot
of cocahoe jigs, rattletraps, and Mirro-Lures
for our artificial lures, and will have live
shrimp and either live cocahoes or mullet.
